Barbarella's 2 Year Anniversary

Well kiddies, the weekend is upon us and there are lots of fantastic things for you to occupy your time with but I'm already focused on Sunday. Our baby sister Barbarella is entering her terrible twos and she's throwing one hell of a party to celebrate. It seems fitting that Glitoris is soundtracking the night, since without Tuezgayz I might have never discovered what a bumpin' place Barbarella is to begin with. This isn't just Tuezgayz on a Sunday though, DJ Harvey will be bringing his New Noise as well.

It all kicks off at 10pm Sunday night and the first 100 people through the door will receive a commemorative T-Shirt to help you remember you were there when the sun comes up on Monday. There's no cover charge but the party is 21+, happy hour is running all night so you can get $1 Lone Stars till it's no longer legal. Grab your best girl, guy, transgendered person, roommate, co-worker, acquaintance, ex-lover, future-lover, frienemy or foe and get your booty on the dancefloor. We won't let you out until your drenched with sweat and you have glitter in unknown places from unknown places.

Blood Diamonds - Grin video via YouTube

Join myself, ATXHipsters and theGlitoris for the best birthday for a 2 year old that you have ever seen. Oh, and don't forget parking meters are free downtown on a Sunday but with happy hour going all night, you should plan for sober transportation. Draw straws to decide who stays sober. Last but not least, if you have a smartphone, Barbarella is a Tabbed Out venue and that's a great way to NOT lose your credit card at the bar.

Make sure you RSVP on Facebook and you should "Like" this event on Do512 while you're at it. See you on the dancefloor!

Swalloween TONIGHT!!

I'm guessing a lot of you already did all kinds of Halloween parties over the weekend but guess what? As soon as you attend the 2nd annual Swalloween Bash hosted by the Glitoris you're going to realize how lame those other parties were. Our friends over at the Glitoris do NOT mess around when it comes to a serious dance party, in case you hadn't heard they are the city of Austin's choice for "Best Club Night" according to the Austin Chronicle Best of 2011 issue.

It's going to be a costume party so this is your last chance of the year to show how creative/slutty/interesting you can look for Halloween 2011. In other words, if you show up wearing standard street clothes you're going to look like a fool. The whole thing kicks-off at 10pm tonight at Barbarella. If you show up before midnight there's no cover charge but if you arrive at midnight or later, you'll have to pay a $3 cover. I can tell you, from experience, the bar areas are going to be insanely busy to I HIGHLY encourage those of you with smartphones (all of you) to download Tabbed Out. That will allow you to close your bar tab with your phone, which means no leaving your credit card behind the bar and no trying to get the bartenders attention at 2:15 in the morning. This site is not sponsored by Tabbed Out, I'm just sayin' it's a good idea to use it.

In addition to music from the Glitoris you will also hear a set by, Austin's greatest party photographer and bad-ass DJ, ulovei. Expect unShazaamable dance-hits from the future from the folks at Glitoris and a mixed bag of classics and new-jams from ulovei. This party is sponsored by the amazing Knuckle Rumbler crew as well as those beautiful, mysterious folks over at Sleeping W/Strangers. All in all you couldn't ask for a better crew of party-purveyors in Austin. Come early, stay late.

Dntel at Emo's TONIGHT!

Remember in the early aughts how in love you were with The Postal Service album, then by the mid-aughts you were kind of over it but still wished they would release another album? Well, kids guess what? That's not going to happen but the good news is the half of The Postal Service responsible for the cool beats and most of the production is still making music without that whine-ass Ben Gibbard. Dntel was making cool music BEFORE The Postal Service and after as well. The latest release is titled, After Parties it's a pair of EPs, which you can grab separately or as a combo. If you're a fan of electronic compositions that aren't endlessly generic house-music then tonight's show at Emo's is for you. You can still buy will-call tickets or you can roll the dice on the chance of paying $10 at the door. To be honest, I really don't have a gage for whether or not this show will sell-out. Personally, I love Dntel and I feel like a lot of other people would too but you may not realize it until you are at the show.

Dntel - video via YouTube

You can keep the party going before and after Dntel's set, by dancing your ass a couple of doors down to Barbarella where our friends with The Glitoris are hosting their wildly successful, weekly Tuezgayz event. I know it's only Tuesday night but I figure, if you're going to be downtown for a show, you might as well get sloppy and stay out until 2am right?

The Calm Blue Sea, Dead Prez, Cousin Claudia

So, this weekend there are several cool events for you to check out of varying genres and locales. Last week, I told you about the free Theophilus London show at Lustre Pearl Saturday night. Then I featured the Classixx show, happening this evening at The Parish. Both of those events are for those of y'all who feel like doing some ass-shakin'. For those of you who would rather do some head-noddin', don't you worry your nod-able head. For you, I'm featuring a show with one of my favorite, local, instrumental bands, The Calm Blue Sea. Their debut, eponymous album is available now and I can assure you it is one of the best local albums of 2011. You can catch them tonight at Emo's for a mere $8 and once you're inside, you can get yourself a $2 beer. So, if you're on a budget, good ole' Emo's has your tattooed back.

The Calm Blue Sea - We Happy Few video via YouTube

If you're not down with gorgeous, sprawling, instrumental rock music at Emo's and you don't feel like getting down with the dance-sounds of Classixx at The Parish stay the fuck home for all I care! Just kidding, I still <3 you (like a friend) and as a friend I suggest you go to Red 7 to enjoy, legendary hip-hop act, Dead Prez. At the moment, tickets are still available but I would expect by the time the show starts it will be sold-out, in other words don't think you're going to be able to just pay at the door sucka!

Dead Prez - Hell Yeah video via YouTube

So, there you have it, several options to get your lazy, broke ass out the house. Oh, and even though I just featured this show, here's the ticket link for the Classixx show at the Parish JUST IN CASE.

Madonna - Luck Star Classixx remix video via YouTube

In none of this pleases you, you are one difficult person to please and that's cool, some people like a challenge (allegedly) but there is STILL another highly viable good-time to be had. The Glitoris' monthly visitor Cousin Claudia is at Elysium tonight. It will be the final Cousin Claudia event of the summer. *Sad Face* If you have not been to a Glitoris event yet, then you really need to get out more. Seriously, what's your deal?

Love Parade AND Big Freedia

Well folks, as you know it can be tough to decide when there are several events you want to attend happening in the same night. Tomorrow night, is one of those nights when decisions must be made. On the one hand, you've got Big Freedia, bringing her New Orleans sissy-bounce extravaganza to Red 7's inside stage. This is guaranteed to be a sweaty, wild uber-fun time. If you haven't seen Big Freedia on any of her previous trips to Austin then you are really missing out. I'm almost envious of you first timers because there is nothing I could tell you that could prepare you for the shear, pornographic, and pervasive ass shaking that will go down on and around Red 7's tiny inside stage tomorrow night. Tickets are still available if you want to catch Big Freedia and her set begins at 1am.

Big Freedia - Y'all Get Back Now video via YouTube

Thank Oprah, Big Freedia's set doesn't start until 1am because I definitely want to hit Elysium for ATX Hipsters' Love Parade party. The dance floor is going to be drenched in sweat as Austin's greatest queer DJ's each take turns playing some jams for the crowd. The cover charge is only $3 and the music starts after the Queerbomb parade ends. Don't celebrate gay pride at a corporately-sponsored street party on 4th. Join the hip-queers like me as we get our dance on with DJ sets by:

Also, I mentioned the $3 cover charge HOWEVER I forgot some highly important, other, details:

Eccentric Attire encouraged!
NO COVER for boys in heels
NO COVER for girls in fake moustaches or beards (or real moustaches or real beards)

21+

Doors open at 9 PM

So, the deal is, I'm going to get my party on at Elysium and then sneak out for a few minutes to catch Big Freedia over at Red 7, then it's back to Elysium till the wee hours of the morning. I'm so excited!

Not To Be Missed Thursday

Hey y'all (read in Paul Deen voice), there are a few essential happenings tomorrow night that I wanted you to be aware of in case you feel like getting off the sofa. They are varied in nature and location so you'll have plenty of choices if you can drag yourself away from 30 Rock. The first event I want to mention features gratis booze so you'll want to head over to the event page A.S.A.P. and R.S.V.P. so you can get your drink on. This event is sponsored by some of our favorite Austin groups/companies, including, the always effervescent Glitoris who will be bumping some tunes whilst people tour and explore Austin's Paramount and State theaters. The above events link will give you all the down and dirty about prizes, contests and the like.

Meanwhile over on Red River, our Knuckle Rumbler friends are hosting Alabama's-own Yelawolf at the Mohawk. You may recall that I had a brief chat with Yelawolf during SXSW this year in which we discussed the state of the global economy, financial derivatives and other important matters. If you want to get down with some Alabama trunk-music tomorrow night you better snag yourself a ticket, word on the virtual-street is they're almost gone!

Yelawolf - In This Club video via YouTube

A few blocks away from Yelawolf two of my favorite Austin bands will be tearing up Emo's inside stage for a mere $5. That's right Markov are, once again, joining forces with Zlam Dunk to melt your collective faces. Wait, there's more. Not only do you get Markov and Zlam Dunk for your $5 bill, you can also catch Say Say Say, Paper Mache and Equals. All in all a fantastic bill of local artists with lots of promise.

Markov - Jaws of Life video via YouTube

Or if you INSIST on seeing some touring indie-rock bands you could hit Emo's outside stage for Black Lips and Vivian Girls. That promises to be one of the messiest looking and sounding 1-2 punches of indie-rock you'll ever experience. I DARE you to be drunker than those bands before they start performing. Actually, don't attempt that, their livers are seasoned since they, pretty much, get paid in booze. Tickets are still available for that show if you're interested. I've seen both artists perform in the past and the shows were fun but I feel like Vivian Girls have an, almost, entirely different line-up from when I last saw them?

Vivian Girls - I Heard You Say video via YouTube

So, that's what I've got for you tomorrow night. I wouldn't judge if you decided to sofa-surf instead but you DO have options if you want to leave the house.

Royal Bangs, Big Freedia, Glit's Anniversary

As I mentioned Wednesday, I really want y'all to come out and celebrate the anniversary of the Glitoris BUT I would be remiss if I didn't mention a couple of other happening Saturday night. I know not all of you are into dance parties with wall-to-wall fun. In fact I bet some of you are hoping to catch some rock and/or roll on Saturday night. It is for those people that I mention one of my favorites from SXSW 2010 is coming back to the very venue where I saw them last March. That's right, the Royal Bangs have made the trip down from Tennessee to rock your faces off on Emo's inside stage Saturday night. There's a couple of opening acts but you're going to be getting happy hour drinks at Barbarella from 10pm-11pm so you're probably going to miss all that. If you do want to catch the Royal Bangs' set tickets will set you back about $8 and I don't have set times but I can bet they go on around 12:30am.

Royal Bangs - Live at Emo's video via YouTube

The other show I want to mention is, also, right down the street from Glitoris' 1-year anniversary bash at Barbarella. Of course, I'm referring to Big Freedia and Kool Keith at the Mohawk. If you didn't catch Big Freedia at Fun Fun Fun Fest this year then I suppose I would find it acceptable for you to sneak down the street to catch her ridiculously fun and borderline-pornographic set at the 'Hawk. In fact if you could kidnap her and her Shake Team and bring 'em on down to Barbarella when they're through with the hipsters I'd appreciate it. Oh, and while you're at the Mohawk for the love of God could you PLEASE shave some scraggly hipster beards? Thanks.

Big Freedia _ Get Back video via YouTube

If you don't know who Kool Keith is by now I really don't think anything I write hear could/would make a difference. He's an MF legend, he's an MF weirdo and he'll play Austin again in a few months, you can miss it. Also, I'm not sure if this is a pro or a con for attendance to the show but Kool Keith will be recording the performance, potentially for a future release.Tickets are still available for this show and will set you back $12. The performances are taking place on the outside stage so dress appropriately.

Glitoris' Anniversary Party

There are always plenty of options for great shows, parties, events etc on any given weekend in Austin. This Saturday the 15th is no exception but if you're not at Barbarella for Glitoris' anniversary bash then you will most assuredly be missing out. It's hard to believe it's only been a year that Glitoris has been on the scene producing some of the most fun, wild and debaucherous parties in the city. Through a mix of social-media brilliance, and an ear to the pulsing ground of electronic music Glitoris turned Tuesday night into one of the best party nights in Austin. Their Tuezgayz event turned Barbarella into a downtown destination. Don't believe me? Just ask Drew Barrymore and Scarlett Johansson where they party on a Tuesday in Austin.

The whole thing will kick off at 10pm this Saturday the 15th. Arriving before 12:30am gets you admission with no cover, after that it's $3. If you get there before 11pm then you can get all the well liquor that's legal to sell you at $2 a drink. There will be a specialty drink in honor of the Glitoris made with Grapfruit Izzie, just ask for "the Glit". For those of you who wanna roll with me and the rest of the VIP's you can enter for a chance to win a wristband, which will gain you access to Barbarella's 2nd floor. Just head over to RSVP It and enter the code: 6969 (of course). Winners will be notified on the day of the party regarding their VIP status. Don't worry, there's no dancefloor in the loft area so we can still get down on the dancefloor with or without a wristband and/or shirt.

Just for the record, as of the writing of this post 252 people RSVP'd on the Facebook event page indicating that this party is going to be wall to wall people dancing, sweating and generally spilling their drinks. I, for one, can not wait! This Tuezgayz promo video should give you a little taste of the kind of music/atmosphere you can expect from a Glitoris event.

The Glass - Is It Me? video via YouTube

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention it's best to assume you're going to have beautiful photos taken so I'd dress accordingly. I happen to know that Austin's best party photographer, ULoveI will be attendance, camera in hand. For me that means I'll probably have to buy a new shirt since I think he's photographed me in all of my best one's already. What? I'm self-conscious about stuff like that!

Jenny and Johnny w/Grandchildren

With a name like Jenny and Johnny you know you're going to hear some twee-indie-pop at Emo's outside stage tomorrow night. For those of you who don't know already, yes I' m talking to you, Jenny is Jenny Lewis and Johnny is Jonathan Rice. They are a couple in real life and in indie-rock life too (which is more surreal). They figured hey, we're always together we might as well write and record some thematically dark yet happy-sounding indie-pop together. Personally, I am of the school that "You don't shit wear you eat". In otherwords don't work with people who you're schtooping but I suppose it's a good way to tour and be with your loved one(s) at the same time. If you think about it, none of this is any of my business, nor does it have to do with their music. I look forward to hearing their stage banter, I expect lots of stinging barbs but maybe they'll be all lovey-dovey. Only time will tell. As of the writing of this post tickets are still available and will set you back a cool $18 at the door or $16 in advance. To be honest I don't see this being a sell-out show, not because they don't deserve it but because it's a Tuesday night and I feel like there are still a lot of hipsters who don't know about this project YET.

Jenny and Johnny - Scissor Run video via YouTube

Opening for Jenny and Johnny tomorrow night will be experimental, electro-pop outfit Grandchildren. To me they sound like they listened to a lot of Brian Wilson on a lot of drugs (as if there's any other way). I'm not sure how many people reproduce the live sound but the LP sounds like a bedroom creation with Pro-Tools, lots of sonic layers and beautiful cough-syrup melodies. If you're a fan of Animal Collective make sure to arrive early enough to catch Grandchildren. Doors for this show open at 9pm, so this tired blogger is hoping it will be an early(ish) show. I'm not a big fan of staying out until 2am on weeknights, I need to get my Bloggy rest y'all.

Grandchildren - Saturn Returns (Runaway Remix) video via YouTube

Also, if it ends before 2, I can jump over to the new Barbarella for Tuezgayz, hosted by the Glitoris.com.

PS.
The address listed in the above video is wrong by 2 numbers, since Barbarella moved. Also, the photos were taken by one of Austin's best party photographers ULoveI. If you know what I look like you can see me in this video for a moment, if you don't then I'm whichever dude you find most attractive. #Dealer'sChoice

Jimmy Edgar in Austin Tomorrow Night

My homegirl the Glitoris has teamed up with those dashing folks over at Learning Secrets to bring Jimmy Edgar to our fair city. If you hurry on over to the official home of the Glitoris you can enter a contest to win free entry to the show! You best be hurrying though, the deadline for entries is in less than 3 hours (5pm Fri CST). In addition to entering the contest make sure you hurry-up and RSVP to get $7 entry. Those of you who don't RSVP will be paying $10 at the door. Did I mention there is also free Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka while supplies last? Not to mention $1 PBR's, so you can be a budget-baller, we all know you just wrote a hot check for rent and you need to watch your expenditures, but trust me this show is worth it. All this goes down Saturday night at Austin's Beauty Bar. I'd show up around 10ish if you want some of that free vodka. Chances are it will run out quickly, so don't be a straggler...or a stranger for that matter.

Wed. Night via Nepotism

Whatcha up to? Going out tonight? Hitting the downtown scene with the scene kids? Trying to be seen? No? Well, then this post isn't for you. This post is for my downtown on a Wednesday night kind of people. My people who work in the morning but still wanna see When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth play the Mohawk's inside stage tonight. My people who are ok with the fact that the show won't end 'till 2am. Maybe I should digress at this point before I've convinced all of us to stay home and make love to the DVR.

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth - Selected for Jerry Duty video via YouTube

Or hey, you know what? If "doom-rock" isn't really what you're down with, the Glitoris is taking 4th street to Church and tonight is the inaugaral throw-down. Dress up for Church at Oil Can Harry's tonight and listen as their sound system makes noises it has NEVER made before. There are rumblings of a red wine special via faux-eucharist. Going too far? You decide!

the Glitoris - Church at OCH video via YouTube.

So, you don't want doom-rock or electro-homo dance party at a gay bar? What's wrong with you? Well, don't worry I have your back. Bloggy-favs, TV Torso are playing a tour-kickoff show tonight on Emo's inside stage. If you're reading this "from away" then make sure you click the band's name, above, to see if they'll be hitting your town.

Remember that CD of Matisyahu live at Stubb's? Well, he's doing a live sequel tonight. I feel like tickets will be available for last-minute purchase but mayhaps me underestimates the draw of Matisyahu? Mayhaps indeed.

So, that's what I may or may not be up to tonight. Perhaps I'll see you on the Night Owl bus?
