Rock Out in the Morning

So the Austin blogosphere is a buzz with ACL Fest after-parties but what about the pre-parties y'all? KGSR is hosting a series of live-performances for their morning show all weekend long, which of course starts on Thursday morning. If you want to see it live, hit Threadgill's World Headquarters in S. Austin it costs $5 to get in but all of that money goes to charity. So, you'll have that going for you already, which is nice. You can catch the full line-up of artists and times, keeping in mind that it's all "tentative". Don't worry about that though, KGSR are the kings/queens/benevolent-dictators of Adult-Alternative so even if they sub some artists out they won't give you anyone that is ridiculously awful. After all, this is being broadcast on the radio and interwebs for anyone to hear, for free!

David Garza will be kicking things off at 7:30am tomorrow.

Not to sound like a hippie or anything, you can see how clean my feet are if you ever meet me in person, but Medeski, Martin & Wood?!?! For $5?!?! Srsly KGSR I <3 you so much right now. Let's hang out, call me. Oh, and if you are a hippie or just a person with dirty feet, nothing personal, we're still cool. Right?

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears are back in town and they'll be playing Threadgill's at 8am. Make sure you at least listen to that one on the radio if you can't get down there. Nothing says good morning like some punchy throw-back soul, and just to help you picture it, the horns you hear are not shiny and they look a little beat up. It's almost like you're there isn't it?

That other cool band from Providence, The Low Anthem, ended up with the earliest time slot. They'll be playing at 7am Friday, which is, coincidentally, the time you may begin serving alcohol. Hmmm. Whadayaknow? I mean to imply nothing about the band's imbibing habits by that comment. They are stunning.

Have I told you there's going to be free food at this event too? Also, you might get to meet Andy Langer. Or, maybe, see him from afar and tell people you met him and he asked you to hang out at the fest for free but you didn't want to ditch your buds so you went to Taco Cabana and just chilled instead. Or not, that's your call, I'm just throwing out ideas here.

Spoon v. Deer Tick v. Balmorhea +

Tomorrow is the first of three nights, in which, Spoon will be performing at Stubb's. Each note has two different opening bands, one local, one touring. Thursday Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears will be representing the local opener and Quasi will be the touring act. Friday it's Dale Watson followed by Low. The third, and final show, on Saturday will feature the Strange Boys and Atlas Sound.

By the way I never knew this song had a video but I swear I've been to this furniture store I'm quite sure it's on Burnet near W. Anderson. Just sayin'

I love Spoon, don't get me wrong but I'm quite sure those shows are sold-out and this is Austin, which means Spoon ain't the only dog and pony show in town. For my money, I would love to catch Deer Tick at Emo's. They are probably the best thing to come out of Rhode Island since...since, whatever great thing has come from RI in the past? I don't know. I do know at the time of my writing this that you can still get yourself a ticket to hear Deer Tick in person. I love the singer's weathered, belching voice and hey, they even have a jug-band style song. Gotta love that right?

If, you're a real Austin snob and you don't watch touring acts let's hang out and form a club. Maybe we could talk about it before and/or after Balmorhea performs at the Cactus Cafe tomorrow it's an early show (8:30) so maybe we can head over to Deer Tick after. Mmm kay?

In a totally un-related note, have y'all heard anything from the new the Gossip record? It's produced by Rick Rubin, which I'm sure was great for the band but as a fan I'm not really sure how to put my finger on his "signature sound" to know in what ways he has influenced this new album. I do know that the first single is vicious, I love it and it pains me to post this video since it's sourced for blogger P. Hilton's YouTube channel :-(. Oh well, I guess the Gossip DOES appeal to mall-rats/tweens/vacant souls/etc.

Friday Night Fights

Wow, so tonight features some major show action in Austin. At least 2 out of the 3 majors are already sold-out. I still haven't managed to find a way into the sold-out Animal Collective show at Stubb's and tickets are going for $40-$200 on Craigslist. Remember when Craigslist was cool? Back before it was over-run with scam artists and people who always want to send me their fake Nigerian Money Orders? That was cool. I may just go down to the show after 10pm and see if I can get a ticket at the door or something. Who knows? Gotta ticket?

Then, a mere block away, and simultaneously occuring, is another sold-out show featuring Bonnie "Prince" Billy at the Mohawk's outside stage. I recommend making friends with the people who live in those condos that sit between Mohawk and Stubb's, unless they live on the side of the L that doesn't face either location. Who buys those places? Can you imagine having either: Club DeVille, Mohawk, Stubb's, or the Hospital/Interstate out your bedroom window? I suppose if you're a night owl it's cool, I actually saw people watching the Helio Sequence show at Mohawk from their balcony last night. Seemed like they had almost the same perspective I had from the Mohawk's rooftop deck from their balcony. But I digress. Watch a Bonnie "Prince" Billy video why don't 'cha?

Moving on to the third, and as far as I know not-yet sold-out show of the evening. The New York Dolls are going on after Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears rock Emo's outside stage tonight. I'm a big fan of local artists Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears and I am aware of the legendary status of the New York Dolls so I'm sure this is going to be a great show. However, through no fault of their own the New York Dolls are forever associated in my mind with former (e)M(p)T(y)V VJ Jesse Camp. Sorry NYD's. So anyway, if you want to check this show out here's the ticket link and it may, or may not , be sold-out by the time you click it.

What's going on elsewhere within the AustinBloggyLimits for those of us who didn't get tickets to these sold-out-ish shows? Well there's always the other sold-out-ish show featuring Alejandro Escovedo, at Antone's. Here's the ticket link for that show which, again, may, or may not be of use to you at the time you read this. Or you can catch Unfortunate Heads at Lambert's, if that's more your vibe? Or hell, you can recession your ass at home with some movies you DVR'd from television too. That's cool if you dress uncomfortably and spring for fancy glasses from TJ Maxxed-Out-Your-Credit-Cards. Or maybe you can just play your music way too loudly and try to talk to your friends while texting and taking crappy cell phone pictures in the dark to re-create the concert experience in a different environment? Could be fun? Try to destroy your bathroom first for the full effect and possibly charge your friends to get into your intensely loud/dark/hot environment. For maximum authenticity mark your friend's dates, who are too young for them, with giant, black, permanent marker X's.

A Show A Day

Maybe it's just me but I feel like June really zipped by quickly this year. I was looking at my calendar yesterday, when I realized we only have a week left of June '08! Big deal, so then I was over at Show List Austin and I realized you could see something cool every night for a week, and not just a Judeo-Christian week, but a Beatle 8-day week.
I suppose that's the whole reason to live here right? So anyway, this is what I would see if I went out every night for a week:

• Tonight Jun. 25th: Go to Emo's see THE BREAD, Spitting Bullets, Van Buren Boys
• Tomorrow Jun. 26th: It's your call, go back to Emo's and catch {{{Sunset}}}, or go to the Mohawk and see Peel, Frightened Rabbit, and Oxford Collapse. Or do both, cause the Mohawk show is early and free!
• Friday Jun. 27th: The Fuck Yeah Tour hits the Mohawk with Matt & Kim, Deathset...many others. Oh No! Oh My! and 3 others @ Emo's Lounge. Bird Peterson @ the Beauty Bar. Magnetic Fields tribute night?!?! @ Trophy's.
• Saturday Jun. 28th: Shapes Have Fangs @ Beerland. What Made Milwaukee Famous, Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears @ Keep Austin Weird Fest, on Auditorium Shores. Noise Revival Orchestra @ Lambert's. Alejandro (What's with all the hype this week) Escovedo @ the Continental Club & Auditorium Shores.
• Sunday Jun. 29th: Admittedly Sunday and Monday are going to be more roll of the dice experiences. On these nights I made my choices based on very little knowledge of the artists. That being said, I would check out Beerland to see what the hell "Atomic Honky Tonk Nite" means, then I would either take a bus up to Hole in the Wall for Funkatron, Hollywood Gossip, Widsom Teeth and Ideal Soul Mart. Or, I'd stay downtown and see Lymbyc Systym and Her Space Holiday at the Mohawk.
• Monday Jun. 30th: I choose metal/hardcore/whatever-core at Red 7 OR London After Midnight @ Elysium.
• Tuesday July 1st: We're back to exciting shows again. No Age, Abe Vigoda @ Emo's <----That's going to be a good one. It stands alone.
• Wednesday July 2nd: We're at the end of our Christian week. Austin Bloggy Limits favorites, Fleet Foxes @ the Mohawk!!
• Thursday July 3rd: We end our Beatles week with a Dj set by Andy Rourke of the Smiths @ Emo's Lounge? That's a bit anti-climactic. No way, I wouldn't do that to you. We're walking one door down to catch {{{Sunset}}} again @ Emo's Inside, because we really love {{{Sunset}}} even if we always have to search for the { } keys. Unless Morrissey shows up to see Andy Rourke, then we're totally bailing on {{{Sunset}}} sorry.
