Win Star Slinger Tickets

U.K. electronic music producer/DJ, Star Slinger is touring the U.S. and will be at Beauty Bar Wednesday night. You probably know Star Slinger from his high-profile remixes, which includes work with Broken Social Scene and Washed Out among others. He has recently released his own compositions, including a single out now via Green Label Sound, which you can listen to below the break. Tomorrow night's show at Beauty Bar is guaranteed to be a hot, sweaty, dancing mass of enthusiasm and if you want in on the action you should grab yourself some tickets now. As I mentioned, Star Slinger is based in the U.K. so you won't get too many chances to see him perform live.

Speaking of chances, I've got a pair of tickets up for grabs and winning them is pretty simple. I can get you on the guest list with a +1 and all you have to do is email contest@austinbloggylimits.com put Star Slinger as the subject and put your real name in the body. The winner will be notified between 3p and 4p on Wednesday. If you don't receive an email by 4:05p Wednesday, assume you have not won and just buy some tickets.

You can listen to Star Slinger's Green Label Sound single here:

Also, feel free to tell all of your friends about the contest. Just remember it ends between 3p and 4p tomorrow.

Delta Spirit at Emo's Tonight

Alright kiddos it's the eve of ACL Fest and it's your final night of, "see a show every night leading up to ACL Fest." For tonight, it's a 2 for 1 kind of deal, I'm sending you to our beloved Emo's to see Delta Spirit. See, it's a 2 for 1 because it's an OFFICAL ACL aftershow, even though it's actually a pre-show. You can still get tickets and they're less than $20. As I mentioned yesterday, Delta Spirit are playing the same time as Fool's Gold at the fest, so this will be a great opportunity for you to see both bands perform full sets.

Delta Spirit - White Table video via YouTube

Of course, given that tonight is the unofficial kick-off to ACL weekend, there are lots and lots of shows for you to check out. Some of these shows you can just pay at the door, some require purchasing tickets in advance and some are crazy exclusive. One of my favorite hip-hop producer/DJ's is in town tonight at Red 7, you might know him as the DJ for North Carolina's Little Brother, that's right I'm talking about 9th Wonder. Tickets are only $10 and anyone who is a fan of hip-hop will be highly entertained. Perhaps you're familiar with his work already and didn't realize it. Here's one of my favorite of 9th Wonder's productions.

Erykah Badu - Honey video via YouTube

Just a door or two away from the 9th Wonder show, over at Beauty Bar you can catch all sorts of great Austin bands at the Art Disaster party. All sorts of genres will be represented with both DJ's and bands spinning, performing and generally destroying any and all types of music. Click the link for the full rundown on who is playing when, and on which stage. You can also download a free mixtape from the site and RSVP for entry.

Now, is the part where I mention the more exclusive shows. No offense, but if you didn't already know about these ones your chances are getting in are quite marginal. There is a mini-British-invasion at Austin's W Hotel tonight, with performances by both Coldplay and Katy B. Coldplay are taping an episode of Austin City Limits in the Moody Theater, which promises to be their most intimate performance in years. However, word on the tweet is they are bringing their full-arena show into the much smaller space. I'm talking balloons, confetti, balloons filled with confetti and Chris Martin running his tiny-ass off. Katy B is bringing her U.K. dancefloor bangers to the Great Room in the W as part of their Symmetry Live series. It will be one of Katy's first shows in the U.S. and I, for one, am very excite to see her perform.

So Much Friday Goodness!

As if we don't have enough to worry about with SXSW right around the corner I almost forgot it's a typical Friday night in Austin packed with good shows to go see. I mentioned yesterday that my favorite, local, post-punkers, Markov are playing a free show at Red 7 with Zlam Dunk. However, for those of you not down with guitar music you also have some pretty bad-ass options to choose from. For instance, the LEGENDARY Digable Planets be to rap what key is to lock and they are performing at Venue 222 right in the heart of 6th street madness. You can still get $15 tickets to that show or if you're feeling like a baller they have VIP tickets for $50. Doors for the Digable Planets show open at 8p and the first, of four, acts goes on at 9p.

Speaking of bad-ass/legendary hip-hop... happening right next door to Red 7 at Beauty Bar, Stones Throw Records' own Peanut Butter Wolf will be spinning for FREE. This event is listed as "video/DJ" so I expect there will be some technological wizardry allowing images to go with the music, I know it's like the 21st century or some shit. However, since this event is both free and hipster-approved I would get there early if you expect to get in. If you love standing in lines looking good then just show-up, ya know, like, whenever.

Meanwhile a few blocks away back in guitar-music land blog-stars The Walkmen will be playing a headlining set to a bunch of people who would rather chat with each other than listen at Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater. The Walkmen's most recent LP, Lisbon didn't make my best albums of 2010 list but it came damned near close and I enjoy their music so much that I once went to a Cake concert because The Walkmen were the opening act. That's devotion right there people.

Tickets for the Stubb's show are still available and will set you back $18. Local bad-asses, TV Torso will play the first slot with The Head and The Heart as the meat of your rock 'n roll sandwich.

Holy ish! Didn't that The Head and the Heart song remind you of Ryan Adams at least for a minute?!?! I HIGHLY approve!

Weird Al Tomorrow!! After-Party Choices

Can you believe that FunFunFun Fest kicks off tomorrow night with Mr. Weird Al Yankovic himself?!?! I can't wait to hear what songs he puts into his polka medley, I'm really hoping he manages to work Whip My Hair in there somehow. I'm also excited to see the Apples in Stereo perform live, although I'm not gonna lie I kind of hope they DON'T play the Powerpuff Girls Theme and something tells me they most certainly will.

In an off-festival grounds note, this year seems to have more after-parties than years passed and I am for it. Personally, I am too old to do both the festival AND after-parties but for those of you with more stamina and commitment to parties I thought I would highlight some of the best of the best...after the jump of course.

Apples in Stereo - Dance Floor video via YouTube

Friday night has the least appealing after-parties, no offense party planners and promoters, I understand you don't want to shoot your party wads so early in the weekend. If I were you, I would head to the Mohawk for the Gorilla Vs. Bear party. The headliner is a secret but I trust GvsB to book someone bad-ass. We know for a fact that Memory Tapes will be there and that's good enough for me.

Memory Tapes - Bicycle video via YouTube

My other Friday night choice would be Dâm-Funk's DJ set at Beauty Bar. If you go to this show though, I'd bring a flask those bartenders, while beautiful are slow and full of attitude. That's right I said it!

Dâm-Funk - Mirrors video via YouTube

Saturday night is all about Jean Grae DJing at ND. That show will also feature Devin the Dude amongst others. The other viable option is back at Snooty Bar where Bloggy-favs Delorean will be spinning tunes. You could also just throw-down with some non-marquis names at Scoot Inn where my brethren in blogging Knuckle Rumbler will be co-hosting a party with the Glitoris.

the Herbaliser ft. Jean Grae - Nah'Mean, Nah'm Sayin video via YouTube

Sunday night has slim-pickings for official after-parties but the good news is they'll be half price. All of the parties I've mentioned so far are $5 if you have a FunFunFun Fest wristband or $10 if you're a have-not. On Sunday night it will be $5 for the have-nots and free for those of you with a FFF pass. In all honesty though, the only party that interests me that night is back at Beauty Bar where Yelle will be Djing. Do you like how I insult that venue's bar staff and then I keep telling you to go there? Whadayagonnado?

Jimmy Edgar in Austin Tomorrow Night

My homegirl the Glitoris has teamed up with those dashing folks over at Learning Secrets to bring Jimmy Edgar to our fair city. If you hurry on over to the official home of the Glitoris you can enter a contest to win free entry to the show! You best be hurrying though, the deadline for entries is in less than 3 hours (5pm Fri CST). In addition to entering the contest make sure you hurry-up and RSVP to get $7 entry. Those of you who don't RSVP will be paying $10 at the door. Did I mention there is also free Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka while supplies last? Not to mention $1 PBR's, so you can be a budget-baller, we all know you just wrote a hot check for rent and you need to watch your expenditures, but trust me this show is worth it. All this goes down Saturday night at Austin's Beauty Bar. I'd show up around 10ish if you want some of that free vodka. Chances are it will run out quickly, so don't be a straggler...or a stranger for that matter.

You can also download the latest single from J. Edgar over at his official site, fo free! The song is, appropriately titled, Hot, Raw Sex and comes from Edgar's latest LP, XXX.

When you hit Beauty Bar tomorrow, make sure to inquire with the Glitoris about mussy rentals/rides. :-)

Beauty Bar, Friday, It's Going Down.

The only thing better than a party, is an anniversary party for a company that throws parties professionally. That's why you should head over to Beauty Bar Friday night for Learning Secrets 6th Anniversary party. It's also my homegirl Jen Leduc's birthday so she'll be hosting some bands in a different part of the bar. If you act fast, you can still RSVP for the Learning Secrets party giving you $5 entry, otherwise it's going to be $8 at the door. I expect the house will be full 'round midnight. Did I mention that, remixer's du jour, Classixx will be headlining a DJ set?!?!?

Phoenix - Lisztomania (Classixx Remix) video via YouTube

Needless to say with Classixx in the house, Beauty Bar is going to be a throbbing, sweaty, hipster dance-party. Throw your Lone Star's in the air, y'all!! Before Classixx we'll be seeing, Woolfy, who's signed to DFA Records. Maybe you've heard of it?

Woolfy - Odyssey video via YouTube

The doors for this gig open at 9pm Friday and the first 100 people will get drink ticket(s), which they will be purchasing with the price of admission. Take that alcohol enforcement (TABC)! Just kidding, TABC, we cool. Let's hang out more.

Oh, and for that one reader that's really upset that I would presume that you, my dear reader, already know about DFA Records, when you don't. ---> DFA Info.

As if I'm not going to include an LCD Soundsystem video, chuh, doubt it.

Thanks to DFA Records' distributors Capitol/EMI for not allowing people to embed your official videos from YouTube. That is why I have a video with dogs set to LCD Soundsystem.

I got so caught up in DFA Records, I forgot to give you info about 40 Rock, Jen Leduc's Birthday Bash. Entry to that event, on the same night at Beauty Bar is also $5 but does not require an RSVP. She's hosting four bands, with Stereo is a Lie headlining. Here's the full line-up with poster and more info courtesy of my sister-wives over at Do512.

Beauty Bar RSVP

There are a lot of shows coming up next weekend (Jan 30th and such) but I thought I'd let you know about this one a little early? Why is that, you may ask? Well because Beauty Bar is hosting Learning Secret's 5 Year Anniversary with Andy Butler from Hercules & Love Affair (DJ set), LCD Soundsystem's Pat Mahoney, Ian Orth, and Jeramy Neugent.

If you want to check this party out fo' free! Then all you have to do is R.S.V.P here. Or you can shill out the $3 bucks at the door, but that's your call cowboy.

Snafu Kitties Bring the Melody

Local pop-rockers, Snafu Kitties, are playing tonight and tomorrow. That's two chances to get in on the melodious, keyboard-driven sounds of Snafu Kitties.

Tonight's show is at the fabulous Beauty Bar. Snafu Kitties will be featured fairly early in the evening as part of a fashion show/magazine launch/rock concert. I suppose it should be mentioned that the magazine is called the Lipstick Pages and it's an online feminist zine. Snafu Kitties has a female lead singer, hence the feminist angle.

Tomorrow night you can catch the Kitties at, South Austin-staple, Trophy's. If you've never been to Trophy's you should know that it's a beer bar, which means if you got a flask they ain't lookin'. Try not to get obnoxiously drunk and distract people from the Kitties though, come on man...seriously.
