Not To Be Missed Thursday

Hey y'all (read in Paul Deen voice), there are a few essential happenings tomorrow night that I wanted you to be aware of in case you feel like getting off the sofa. They are varied in nature and location so you'll have plenty of choices if you can drag yourself away from 30 Rock. The first event I want to mention features gratis booze so you'll want to head over to the event page A.S.A.P. and R.S.V.P. so you can get your drink on. This event is sponsored by some of our favorite Austin groups/companies, including, the always effervescent Glitoris who will be bumping some tunes whilst people tour and explore Austin's Paramount and State theaters. The above events link will give you all the down and dirty about prizes, contests and the like.

Meanwhile over on Red River, our Knuckle Rumbler friends are hosting Alabama's-own Yelawolf at the Mohawk. You may recall that I had a brief chat with Yelawolf during SXSW this year in which we discussed the state of the global economy, financial derivatives and other important matters. If you want to get down with some Alabama trunk-music tomorrow night you better snag yourself a ticket, word on the virtual-street is they're almost gone!

Yelawolf - In This Club video via YouTube

A few blocks away from Yelawolf two of my favorite Austin bands will be tearing up Emo's inside stage for a mere $5. That's right Markov are, once again, joining forces with Zlam Dunk to melt your collective faces. Wait, there's more. Not only do you get Markov and Zlam Dunk for your $5 bill, you can also catch Say Say Say, Paper Mache and Equals. All in all a fantastic bill of local artists with lots of promise.

Markov - Jaws of Life video via YouTube

Or if you INSIST on seeing some touring indie-rock bands you could hit Emo's outside stage for Black Lips and Vivian Girls. That promises to be one of the messiest looking and sounding 1-2 punches of indie-rock you'll ever experience. I DARE you to be drunker than those bands before they start performing. Actually, don't attempt that, their livers are seasoned since they, pretty much, get paid in booze. Tickets are still available for that show if you're interested. I've seen both artists perform in the past and the shows were fun but I feel like Vivian Girls have an, almost, entirely different line-up from when I last saw them?

Vivian Girls - I Heard You Say video via YouTube

So, that's what I've got for you tomorrow night. I wouldn't judge if you decided to sofa-surf instead but you DO have options if you want to leave the house.

Ariel Pink & Vivian Girls @ Mohawk Tomorrow

So, during SXSW the Vivian Girls played something like 18 shows, including one on the Lamar pedestrian bridge. Here it is about a month later and they're back already! They'll be supporting Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti tomorrow night at the Mohawk. If you're interested in checking out the show tickets are still available and cost a mere 10 spot or 12 at the door.

Call me crazy but it kind of seems like at this point Ariel Pink should be opening for Vivian Girls but I suppose they only have one album worth of 2 minute songs, so it might be tough to headline. When I saw them at the Mohawk during SXSW the V Girls only played like 20 minutes, but that's SX for ya'.

Free Mp3's courtesy of Paw Tracks Records, thanks.

Find a video or two after the jump...

Did I mention how fun the V Girls stage banter is? They are so valley girl, even though they're alleged to be from Brooklyn. The sound quality on this vid kind of sucks, but here are the V Girls fleshing out their set list with a cover of Wavves' So Bored.

Vivian Girls - So Bored video via YouTube

Speaking of Wavves I noticed yesterday they have a new CD in stores, it looks VERY similar to their previous release, with the skateboarding kid. Instead of being called Wavves like the last album it's called, Wavvves. That's with three v's. But that has nothing to do with this post...

Here's the show I saw from the Vivian Girls, aren't they funny?

Vivian Girls - All the Time video via YouTube

The sound on this video is weird, but it's also how the records sound. So, I guess we can't blame YouTube for this one. I guess AP just likes that far away/late 70's production value.

Did I mention they call this guy's music "Freak Folk" and he's on Animal Collective's label?

SXSW Panic

So I woke up this morning with the feeling that there was some nugget of SXSW info out in the interwebs that I was missing. Some elusive R.S.V.P. that I might miss, "Oh no!". Fear not dear reader, this is just how you're supposed to feel 22 days before SXSW. You know why? Because I was right, there is an R.S.V.P. out there that I just won't get, there are actually a lot of them. This is because it is not possible for you, I, nor anyone else, to see all the shows you want to see during SXSW week. So get over it, and plan ahead! Use the bus when you're in town, it sucks but it doesn't suck as bad as traffic and parking. Besides using the bus is a great way for you to plan to be drunk, which you should. There is free booze everywhere during SXSW, so just assume you're going to be drunk and plan accordingly. I'm thinking disposable cell phone maybe?

Here's some old, free Grizzly Bear tracks to mull over in the mean time. Courtesy of GrizzlyBear.net. Thanks.

Vivian Girls' Drone-Harmony

Vivian Girls - Tell the World video via YouTube

It looks like Brooklyn is most-definitely the epi-center of the indie-rock universe at the moment. Vivian Girls sprang out of the loft movement, which refers to bands that play in lofts...instead of say, a music venue. Like 'em or hate 'em they're the next Vampire Weekend. Not that they are necessarily clever and twee, although they are both of those things, but rather that they are the next blog-hype, bubble band.

At first you may find their sound a bit drone-y and basic, but trust me, if you give it a chance it grows on you. I love me some disaffected vocals and it's even better when the disaffectedness is split up over three part harmonies. Besides, can you really resist the surf rock from Brooklyn? I didn't think so.
