Let's Go to Everything!



Alright y'all, there are a bevy of excellent shows to see this evening. I'm going to highlight four of them here. My top highlight for this evening is the Disclosure show at Stubb's. However, I will add that that particular show is mostly sold-out. I say mostly because the only tickets available are VIP tickets, which will set you back over $140 a piece. I know that some of us ball that hard but most of us don't, which is fine because there are still three more kick-ass shows going on tonight.

For those of you unfamiliar with Disclosure they are a pair of brothers from the U.K. who, un-ironically, produce 90's house-music for a new generation. Their record, Settle was one of my favorite releases of 2013. I have yet to see them live and I will conceit that it won't be the same without all of the guest vocalists who appear on the record. However, I anticipate the stage setup will be pretty elaborate and I know that the brothers Disclosure have a very engaging way of creating their songs live, mixing live instrumentation with on-the-fly sampling and loops. In other words, it won't just look like dudes nodding at their laptops.

Speaking of my favorite albums of 2013, Darkside is also performing this evening. That means the creators of two of my favorite electronic records of 2013 are both in town together. You can find Darkside at Emo's tonight, which means you could conceivably see both Disclosure and Darkside. It would be quite a Yin and Yang experience to catch their sets back-to-back. Disclosure is very light, easily palatable electronic music. Darkside is just as their name implies, dark. This is not electronic music for ravers, this is electronic music for reading a book. In other words, Darkside is some pretty serious shit.

I might also suggest that, following the Disclosure show you head over to Red 7 for Learning Secrets' 10th Anniversary party. Delorean is headlining and I honestly can't believe this show isn't sold-out yet. Those dudes came all the way here from Spain and Learning Secrets only turns 10 once so if you don't go to this show, you'll have to wait like 15 more years for the next important birthday. Can you wait 15 years?

Hell, with those set times you could POSSIBLY catch Disclosure, Darkside and Delorean. That would be a pain in the ass and pretty expensive but it's possible?

Hey rock kids, I haven't forgotten you. My top non-electronic/dance pick for this evening is the Holy Wave show at Hotel Vegas. There aren't advance tickets for this event and the event listing doesn't really have a cover price plainly evident BUT I would guess that it's going to be somewhere in the $10 range. In case this is your first time seeing the name Holy Wave they play woozy, Nuggets-era psychedelic music that is best experienced live. If you're a fan of Austin Psych Fest then you should definitely be at Hotel Vegas tonight to celebrate the release of Holy Wave's new LP, Relax.

Bloggy's Best of 2010 - Music

If you're like me and you probably are if you read blogs, you love lists. Well, 'tis the season and if you can't beat 'em join 'em along with several other clichés. So, let me lead off this year's best albums of 2010 list with the usual disclaimers. The first of which is, love of art is subjective it's hard to compare a hip-hop album to lo-fi garage-rock and then subsequently rank them but that's what I intend to do. Also, I have a full-time job, which doesn't include blogging I also like to watch films and television SO I didn't listen to every album that came out this year I also didn't listen to all of the most critically-acclaimed albums of the year.

Yesterday you had the chance to read Shivvy's best of list, which I fully approve of. Combined with this list, you should get a nice picture in 28 albums of what 2010 had to offer in the way of music. With that all said, I give you the official Bloggy selections for best albums of 2010:

Bloggy's FunFunFun PicksPicksPicks

Unlike some other festivals that occur in the city of Austin, of which there are many, FunFunFun Fest groups their stages by genre. Or at least they are loosely gathered with a common thread amongst the artists. That is one of the reasons I'm not going to do the typical make sure you check out _______ at FunFunFun Fest post. The other reason I don't want to do that sort of post is, I feel like I always appreciate FFF more a few months after it's passed when I hear a song by a band I really like and I realize I saw them at the fest already. In otherwords I recommend you leave yourself open to checking out new artists who you may not have heard of and making notes of who impressed you. For myself, I probably won't be spending a lot of time at the Black stage, not 'cause I'm a racist or anything it's more because I'm not a person who listens to a lot of punk and/or metal so while I can appreciate that the bands on that stage have talent I won't be venturing to that side of the park very often. If you want to hear Bloggy-bands at FFF Fest I'd hang out in the vicinity of the Orange stage, hopping over to the Blue stage every now and again. With that all being said there are a few artists who I, personally, MUST see for the first time. There are also a handful of artists who I have already seen, whom I look forward to seeing again.

Memphis band Magic Kids is one whom I have yet to see and look forward to catching for the first time. They play the orange stage at 12:50 on Sunday so I'll have to drag my ass out of bed in time to get on the bus and into Waterloo Park before they go on. Unfortunately that means I'll have to miss, at least part of, Indian Jewelery's set on the Blue stage at 1:00p on Sunday but alas that's festivals for 'ya. At least at FFF Fest I can easily move between the Blue and Orange stages.

Another artist whom I'm excited to see for the first time is Dominique Young Unique who will be performing on the Blue Stage at 4:50pm on Saturday. I feel like all you need to know about Dominique is that she is young, sassy, and filthy. This video should pretty much sum things up for you.

The last artist(s) I want to mention whom I have not, yet, seen perform live that I look forward to seeing is Israeli punk-band Monotonix. I was extremely surprised to see that they will actually be performing on the Yellow stage, which is generally where the local acts and/or comedic acts perform. I'm hoping they don't burn it down before the Master Pancake Theater guys do their thing. This video of their performance at the Mohawk from a few years back should give you an idea of what you might expect from one of their performances.

SXSW 2010 in Brief...s

What just happened y'all? The last thing I remember was some girl pulling my weave out for cutting her in line at the Swagg presents One Night in Perez Hilton's ass, party. Did I get in? How was Snoop? Yes indeed folks SXSW 2010 has come and gone and now we have a full year to plan for next Spring unless of course Bill Murray sees his shadow at Shangri-La.

So, my first day I was all ambitious, I rocked out in our fair city for roughly 14 hours, mostly in the upright position. I shot like a billion videos and uploaded them hours after they recorded. You probably saw my post on Thursday, well then everything went pear-shaped. My brain got fuzzy, the parties started to run together, I wanted to punch people in the face who told me about surprise guest appearances, basically it was the 2nd day of SXSW. It is my favorite time of year, but damn if it isn't exhausting? Oh, the problems we face in Austin, "Golly, there are just too many awesome things happening at once, I'm tired now." Isn't it brutal?

Long story short, rather than inundate you with EVERY video I shot, I'll just put a little highlighter on a few of them. I'll direct you to the Bloggy YouTube Channel if you'd like to check out all 40 videos from SXSW 2010. Oh, and if you're representing a band or law firm and you'd rather these videos weren't online, let me know, I'm really good at acting like I care.


Royal Bangs - The Windish Showcase SXSW 2010 video via YouTube


The whole Windish Showcase was pretty much awesome. I ended up there on a whim because I knew that the Very Best were showcasing at Emo's on Friday night so I figured I'd try to get in. I paid a $15 cover at the door but only had to stand in line for about 4 minutes. Once inside when the entire line-up was revealed I was psyched. I had wanted to see the Royal Bangs and they didn't disappoint in the least. It was a really high-energy set with great melodies with the musicians locked into tight grooves the whole time, hence the above video.

Sometimes, the short set times during SXSW can work for a band sometimes it can work against them. When Delorean was through with their set it was somewhat startling. They played for 30-40 minutes but I was going wherever they were taking me and the ride ended to quickly. I play to see them again on their next journey through Austin, but in the meantime I have this video to tide me over.

The third and final video I am going to feature comes from a Canadian group who have some crazy, cult following or something. When Born Ruffians took the stage all this 20 somethings appeared out of nowhere crashing through the crowd with looks of extreme glee on their faces. Almost every song the band played had about 2 dozen people singing along, hitting all of their call and response cues and, of course, pogo-ing like mad men. Kudos to you Born Ruffians you had crown involvement during SXSW, there's something to be said for that. I've been to shows during South by when the audience doesn't even clap when the band is through.
