ACL Festival 2013 Preview: More Late Night Shows

For many of you, your ACL Festival is over for 2013. You laughed, you cried, you drank domestic beer, you ate food on a stick and then you resumed your normal 9-5 existence this morning. Tra la la la la la. Well, many of the bands who played in Zilker Park this weekend past, are already on to other cities. Many of the bands are playing a festival in Mexico on Wednesday. Yeah. Wednesday. However, many of these artists are around and you can still catch them at shows outside of the festival.

You can also catch the entire ACL Festival 2013 line-up again this coming weekend. For the first time ever, we are doing a round 2 of ACL Fest and round 2 hasn't sold-out yet. Buy passes for this weekend. You could be watching Wild Nothing at 11:30 in the morning this coming Friday. Think about it and get back to me, you don't have to make any decisions just yet.

If you'd like to see some of the bands but you don't want to do the whole festival thing, I've highlighted some kick-ass Late Night Shows, for which tickets are still available.

If you are reading this from another major city in Texas, there may be official Late Night Shows in your city too but that's your city's business. I'm highlighting events that I would want to attend, for a full listing click the word tickets up there.


I can tell you that there are also two Austin City Limits Television tapings this week. One of them is tomorrow, it will feature Neko Case and the contest for tickets has closed. The other is happening on Thursday and I've listed it above because the ticket giveaway is still open until 9am Tuesday. Tickets for ACL TV are not purchasable, nor are they transferrable. If you're truly desperate to see a taping and you don't win tickets head down to ACL Live around 5pm. Stand near the Willie Nelson statue and tell a volunteer that you didn't win tickets but you want to stand in a space available line. You may not get into the taping this way but who knows? Maybe you will? For the record the space available method is not officially sanctioned and for some artists you may just get turned away. It's a roll of the dice.

Particular highlights from the shows listed above for which you can actually purchase tickets, Savages at the Parish could change your life. Also, I think the Franz Ferdinand show at Emo's is a good purchase because you also get Smith Westerns and Frankie Rose on the bill. Just a side-bar, I'm really in love with the new Frankie Rose record, Herein Wild and if you buy the vinyl at the show it's a limited edition splatter-colored disc.



Honestly, I have no idea what the BURGERAMA CARAVAN OF STARS TOUR 2013 has to do with ACL Fest but for some reason it's listed as an official Late Night Show and I think it's highly worthwhile so here I am mentioning it. I posted a video from The Growlers above the break, they're headlining this Saturday night show at the Parish. I know that at some point along the way, Foxygen were listed as part of this event but they seem to be conspicuously missing from the line-up but they weren't the highlight in this line-up to begin with. So, whether they appear or not this ticket is worth the dough.

Highlight: ACL Fest 2013 Late Night Shows

Since this is the first year that ACL Festival is taking place over the course of two weekends it's the first year that the Late Night Shows are taking place all over Texas. I know, it's a strange correlation but it makes sense. If you're going to ask a touring act to be in the same city two weekends in a row you need to book them some shows for their in between time. As you may know, when you agree to play a festival you agree to NOT play within a certain radius of said festival. That means that most of the bands who have agreed to perform at Austin City Limits Festival this year can't play any unofficial shows within a certain time and/or distance of the fest. Some of the bands who aren't playing official showcases will travel outside of Texas during the week between festivals and then return to play the second weekend, it sounds exhausting to me but I suppose that's the life of a musician.

Personally, I love these bonus shows. I prefer an intimate concert setting to that of a festival but if you're already planning to go to the festival these shows can be a nice bonus. There are lots of great official showcases this year including some really stellar shows in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Below the break you'll find both my highlights and my Highlightiest Highlights. The shows discussed in this post are all official Late Night Shows booked by C3 Presents. Expect lots of counter and competitive shows to be announced by other promoters in the near future. Generally, the folks behind FunFunFun Fest put on free concerts at Mohawk, Red 7 etc. to coincide with ACL Fest. Not really sure if that will happen in the same way this year but that is neither here nor there.

For now, I want to focus on the C3 Concerts Official Late Night Shows featuring artists performing at this year's Austin City Limits Festival. By the way, there are still tickets available for both weekends of the festival. I'll be going the second weekend so, if you want to hang with me that's when you should go too.

So, like I said, the above represents the best of the Late Night Shows HOWEVER, I want to pare that list down to the Highlightiest Highlights. These are the shows you buy tickets for if you can only buy tickets for a couple of the aftershows. Since, I live in Austin and the festival takes place in Austin none of those other Texas places make this list. In fact, fuck those other Texas places. Just kidding other Texas places but for the purposes of this list fuck y'all.

Highlightiest Highlights


You'll notice that a couple of the Highlightiest shows are happening on the same night. For two of these it's a problem, for one of them it's not. Friday, October 4th HAIM & MS MR are performing at Antone's while Wild Nothing & Autre Ne Veut play at The Parish. For me, this is a really tough decision. I've seen three of these four artists before and I know them all to be superb. HAIM & MS MR will be easier to drive to and from, you won't have to deal with downtown and these artists will surely be too large for a venue as small as Antone's the next time they come through town. If you decide to hit The Parish instead, you'll be experiencing Wild Nothing and Autre Ne Veut in the way they should be experienced, in Austin's best sounding room. I love Autre Ne Veut and I LOVE that he was booked for ACL Fest but I can guarantee that what he does won't translate to the festival experience as well as it will in an intimate space. Sophie's choice y'all.

With Widowspeak and The National, since both shows are at Stubb's you should be able to attend both without any overlap and both shows are kick ass. I'm really excited/intrigued with The Growlers' show at The Parish. It seems odd to me that Burger Records is working with C3 rather than booking thos or a similar show at a Transmission venue, or independent venue as an alternative to the fest. However, I like that this show is occuring and it's certainly one of the Highlightiest Higlights.

ACL Festival Preview: Lee Fields & the Expressions

I was one of the fortunate few who had the chance to see Lee Fields & the Expressions perform at the Continental Club earlier this year. It was a hot, sweaty, crowded affair filled with people of all ages and backgrounds and it was truly superb. The Expressions are one of the tightest backing bands I've ever seen. Their terse riffs, soulful rhythms and overall bombastic performance had the crowd hanging on their every note. Matched with Lee Fields' gospel tenor this band can do no wrong. If you're a fan of Sharon Jones or Charles Bradley then make sure you're at the Zilker Stage by 5:30pm Saturday to catch Lee Fields & The Expressions. I predict their performance will be one of the most buzzed-about, break-out performances of the weekend and you'll definitely want to be a part of it.

If you can't make it out to the festival, you can catch Lee Fields' Late Night Show with Alabama Shakes at Stubb's. That show actually takes place tomorrow night before the festival begins and there are still has tickets available.

If you can't make it to either performance, you should at least check out the latest record from Lee Fields & the Expressions, Faithful Man.
