APF 2013: Highlights, Including Tonight

Yesterday, I posted about Time Conflicts in the Austin Psych Fest line-up. Today, I'm going to post some of my daily, highlight artists. There are lots of great bands playing APF, and as I said yesterday, you could just stay at the main stage every day of the festival and see really great sets. If you'd like to dabble in a little bit of curated listening allow me to guide you on this psychic journey.

If you already bought tickets or you would like to buy tickets to Austin Psych Fest, you may do so starting tonight at 6:00pm. Just head on over toward the Mohawk and you'll figure it out from there. That's actually my advice in any given situation. Add Whiskey as needed.

For what it's worth, I'll be going to APF for the full weekend but I understand that you might be short on personal time and cash assets. If you're only heading out to Carson Creek Ranch one day of the festival, I'd go Sunday. That's my opinion and I know the day before Monday isn't ideal for some people. However, Goat is my number one band in the APF draft this year and they play Sunday night. My 2nd round draft pick goes to Elephant Stone, who also perform Sunday. So for me, Sunday has the best single-day-ticket line-up.

Ty Segall + White Fence at the Mohawk

Ty Segall Band will be playing the Mohawk tomorrow in what promises to be one of the most talked-about shows of the month. As a solo artist, Ty Segall has been extraordinarily prolific releasing numerous albums but it wasn't until last year's Ty Rex album of T. Rex covers that people really started to pay attention. Since then there's been some revisionist history of his popularity but regardless of when people started to pay attention they are certainly paying attention now. Ty's set at FunFunFun Fest last year was one of the most lauded of the festival. He and his band are known for putting on a high energy set that melts both brains and faces. The upcoming release of, Slaughterhouse, will be Ty's first release to include his full touring band. I listened to it earlier this week and I can tell you it is some heavy shit y'all. His sound has always had one foot in psychedelic and one foot in classic rock. Slaughterhouse dives head first into a pool of the 13th Floor Elevator by way of Black Sabbath. Tomorrow night's show is sure to feature some of these sludgy psychedelic jams. It's also sure to sell-out. In fact it may be sold-out by the time you're reading this but you can click for tickets just cross your fingers when you do so.

It should be noted that tomorrow night's show at the Mohawk is not simply the Ty Segall Band. It is Ty Segall Band WITH White Fence. Ty and White Fence released a collaborative record, Hair, which is much greater than the sum of its parts. Hair sounds like a collection of songs that were re-discovered after being left out of a Nuggets box set. It makes you want to wear paisley pants and quit your day-job to start smoking reefer full-time.

This is an outdoor show with two opening acts. Memphis band, Useless Eaters should start around 9pm with local band, Rayon Beach taking the earliest support slot tomorrow. It is Friday night downtown so leave early because parking is going to be scarce and costly. See you there!

Woods play the Mohawk

So, tomorrow is Friday night, which means you have to find something socially-approveable to do with your time. I know, it's a lot of pressure, we live in a very judge-y society and that's wrong but it's a fact that we have to live with. Chances are, if you're reading this, you live in Austin so you're gonna wax your handlebar mustache, throw on some jorts and a Goodwill T-shirt hop on your fixie and pedal on down to the Mohawk. You're going to do all of this because psychedelic, lo-fi, Brooklyn band, Woods is headlining the outside stage. Being from Brooklyn, they WILL out hipster you, so don't challenge them to a hipster off. They like bands who only perform in people's living rooms and they drink the fairest of trade, organically-roasted coffees. They prefer Pabst to Lone Star and they have been cultivating their handlebar mustaches WAY longer. Also, anything you like, they liked first and now they hate it and you're lame.

Grab your tickets for tomorrow night's show at the 'Hawk here. Also, feel free to check out Woods latest LP, out now on Woodsist.

In addition to being the oldest East Los Angeles gang, White Fence is the name of a band who you will see performing before Woods takes the stage tomorrow night. The band features Tim Presley of The Strange Boys fame and their latest LP Is Growing Faith is also out now on Woodsist. Expect some woozy, late-60's-style garage-psychedelia. Were there enough hyphens in that description?
