Should I Leave the House Tonight?

Well, here we are. I'm dusting some digital cobwebs off of Austin Bloggy Limits because there's a bunch of good shows happening this weekend and if I don't post about them, I'll forget everything I wanted to see. Places you may or may not see me this evening include: Beerland, Hotel Vegas, Cheer-Up Charlies or My Couch.

All of these venues offer an array of positive reasons to attend the festivities they are hosting this evening. Beerland has Jonly Bonly, Trustees, Party Girl and Borzoi tonight. These bands may not be household names to you but they all offer the sort of visceral, authentic rock 'n roll experience I desire and deserve on a dreary night like tonight. Also, I've really enjoyed what I've heard from Put Together, the new LP from Jonly Bonly and I want to see those songs performed live.



Hotel Vegas also has a killer line-up tonight, which also features local bands with brand new records. Spray Paint's new LP, Clean Blood, Regular Acid, won't be released until next week but you can stream it right now via Stereogum and I have a feeling it MIGHT be available for purchase at tonight's gig. The Rebel is performing tonight in support of their new LP, K Rot, which you purchase online or in person right now. Tonight's Hotel Vegas gig isn't listed as an LP release show for John Wesley Coleman because he already did that but his latest, The Love That You Own is also a new release. Damn y'all! What's with all the new releases in September? All this talk of new releases made me lose track of the line-up, which also includes Ghetto Ghouls and Marriage. If you're accustom to very sterile, controlled concert experiences you should come to this show just so you can see how rock is supposed to be experienced.



Tonight's show at Cheer-Up Charlies ALSO features lots of great Austin bands with recent music releases. This show explores the more pop-music leaning side of Austin's rock music scene, which I'm also a big fan of. If my suggestions up to this point have seemed a bit "noisy" to your delicate aesthetic, then this venue might be a more appropriate choice for you this evening. There are THIRTEEN bands on the line-up for this event but at this point several of them have already performed. If I end up here tonight, I'll want to be there by 9:30 to catch Growl but the line-up is solid from top to bottom.



The fourth option I presented was My Couch, which features the ability to sit around in my underwear watching pre-recorded television, movies, access to pre-purchased beverages and snacks including alcohol. It does not require me to ride the bus, find a parking spot, deal with rain, make awkward conversation or walk. So, as you can see there are lots of excellent ways for me to spend my evening. Let's Go Out Tonight: Thursday June 27th

It's Thursday, I still have to work tomorrow but I am so over this week already. You know what that means? Cheap whiskey, cheap beer, rock 'n roll. First pick, as usual, is ye olde Mohawk. Mikal Cronin headlines in support of his brilliant new LP, MCII go to the show tonight, buy the vinyl at the merch table. Thank me later. I suggest you arrive to the Mohawk by 6pm tonight because Shannon of Shannon and the Clams will be bartending until 7pm followed by a set from the Clams on the outside stage.

Since you're already arriving early enough to get a drink from Shannon, you'll be able to catch Austin bad-asses, A Giant Dog. They'll be kicking things off tonight and you get it all for the price of a $12 ticket.

After all the amps are turned off over on Red River, let's head over to E. 6th to see Sleep Over at Cheer-Up Charlies. I'm not guaranteeing you'll see every moment of Sleep Over's set but your odds are quite good. In my experience the last band at CuC usually starts closer to Midnight. I have no idea what's going on with Sleep Over right now but I always enjoy finding out. The track below is from a year ago. Their latest stuff may be nothing like this you'll have to show up tonight to find out.

Lady Miss Kier, The Calm Blue Sea, La Snacks + More

Generally when people think of Austin, they think tacos, bbq, 6th street, and rock 'n roll. While all of those things are true and good associations it should also be mentioned that we get lots of great dance music, hip-hop and sushi too! What? I like sushi. I say all of this because I was super-excited to see that Lady Miss Kier of Deee-Lite fame is going to DJ at Elysium tomorrow night. I've been watching America's Best Dance Crew and working out some ill routines in preparation for tomorrow night's show and I think I'm ready to bust some serious moves. If you want to be a part of my dance-crew and sweat your ass off to some bad-ass, deep, disco-cuts spun by DJ Lady Miss Kier herself then you should get yourself a ticket and some neon leggings. That's how our crew is going to dress, I have dibs on the neon yellow leggings but no one has claimed pink yet, so that's all you.

Perhaps you're not the sweat it out on the dancefloor kind of person. Perhaps, you'd rather swill some Lone Star and nod your head in a dirty little rock club. I'm not judging I enjoy those things too. In fact, it is for you that I suggest you head to the drag to catch my friends La Snacks at Hole in the Wall. The show is in celebration of the release of their newest 7". I know that last sentence sounds really sexual but I swear I'm referring to a music-related item. Bad-ass up-and-comers The Calm Blue Sea are also playing Hole in the Wall tomorrow night so make sure you arrive in time to catch both acts!

Maybe you're not into divey rock clubs, or sweaty dance clubs. Perhaps you're the outdoorsy type and you fancy yourself a fan of world-influenced gypsy-punk. Well, my friend in spite of your ridiculously specific tastes Austin even has a show for you tomorrow night. You guessed it Gogol Bordello are back in town and they're playing Stubb's Waller Creek Amphitheater just for you. Tickets are unavailable so you'll have to buy them on the streets if you don't have 'em already and keep in mind, it's a Thursday night so this show will end early. In other words, don't dilly-dally around, showing up at midnight and expect to see the band. In fact this show will be done around 10:00 or 10:30 so plan accordingly.

So, I still haven't pegged you, you don't want to dance at Elysium, you don't want to nod your head at Hole in the Wall, you hate gypsy-punk and feel like Stubb's is too dusty. Well guess what asshole? I still have an option for you. You could check out Mouthfeel: We put the Neato in Incognito - dance party over at Cheer-Up Charlies. They even let you bring your own liquor in case you're a cheap-ass. So there, if you're still bored tomorrow night, that's your bad because I gave you plenty of options!
