Utopiafest

There are so many festivals in Austin that it can be hard to keep track of them. Well, I didn't want you to miss out on your chance to get out of the city for a music fest that's, relatively, new to the scene. Utopiafest takes place this weekend on a lovely patch of land in the, appropriately named, town of Utopia, Texas. There will be camping, food, and of course loads of great music. The vibe is mostly folky, pastoral rock but the festival is not pigeon-holed into a specific genre. Some of the most recognizable artists scheduled to perform this weekend include Blitzen Trapper and Dawes but that's only a very small taste of the full line-up.

In an effort to avoid the trappings of the large-scale music festival experience there are only 1500 tickets available for Utopiafest. In other words, if you are interested in being a part of the festivities out in Utopia you should grab yourself some tickets while they're still available. As I mentioned, you can camp on-site and they will even have hot showers available. Take that Bonnarroo! A couple of other things that set Utopiafest apart from other festivals, the beauty of the hill-country venue, free yoga in the morning and even a disc golf course. Bring your tent, bring your disc golfing discs and bring your love for music because it all goes down starting at noon on Friday.

Avi Buffalo at Stubb's

As a loyal reader of this website, I'm sure you already know my love for, Los Angeles band, Avi Buffalo they have been a band to look out for at SXSW (possibly more than once) and I try to give you the heads-up every time they come through Austin. Well guess what? Avi Buffalo will be in town tomorrow. They're playing Stubb's inside stage tomorrow night and you can still get tickets. Their latest release How Come? picks up right where their eponymous debut left off and is intended to tide us all over until the next full-length album is released. If you haven't heard Avi Buffalo's self-titled debut yet, then you're really missing out and you clearly haven't been taking my suggestions in the past. I feel like I've posted the official video for What's In It For a hundred billion times already. It's with that thought in mind that I reluctantly post this unofficial video featuring How Come?.

Fellow Los Angeles-based artists, Nik Freitas will be playing the support slot for Avi Buffalo. It should be a really good match both musically and geographically. Nik is touring behind his new LP, Saturday Night Underwater, check out the album's single below.

SXSW 2010 Preview: Avi Buffalo

The moment I heard Avi Buffalo's song What's In It For? I knew I had to see them at SXSW. Whenever a casual music-listener asks me what kind of music I listen to, I tell them I'm looking for anything that sounds instantly classic. Avi Buffalo sounds classic the moment the needle hits the record. They hail from Los Angeles, but they sound like they enjoy Nuggets-era, psychedelia mixed with their L.A. canyon-folk. There full-length LP, due out in April, is already garnering lots of critical buzz as well as endorsements from fellow musicians. Did I mention they were all born in the 90's? *Blech* I'm getting so old! Maybe they'll give me an exclusive if I buy them some beer?

I used to enjoy "deep-linking" free Mp3's from Sub Pop but that's poor blogging-etiquette so now I'll just point you to where you can get this free Mp3, courtesy of Sub-Pop, thanks.
