Totally NOT ACL Fest: Part 1

ACL Festival starts this Friday for many people but for some of us it starts next week and for some others amongst us, it doesn't start at all. Intrigued? You should be because this post is all about all of that stuff that isn't ACL Fest (part 1).

Let's start with tonight, shall we? Sure it's only Wednesday and it really has nothing to do with ACL Fest but I still want to talk about the fact that Unknown Mortal Orchestra are playing the Mohawk tonight for $14. Also, while some intern is trying to hunt down 500 humidifiers for Lionel Richie's tent compound, the OBN III's will be rocking so hard you won't even be able to think about the government shutdown. OBN III's will hit Beerland's stage sometime before the bar closes. Expect this one to be packed to the gills, loud and one of the best rock and roll experiences in your recent life.

Thursday

Tomorrow night is the, sort of, unofficial start to ACL Fest. Courtyard Hounds are playing the Continental, Queens of the Stone Age are taping a set for ACL TV and the official ACL Late Night Shows also start Thursday.

You know what else goes down on Thursday? Our friends over at Knuckle Rumbler are presenting Art Disaster no. 16. This event takes place at both Red 7 and Holy Mountain and will only cost you $5 at the door. It's even cheaper if you RSVP, $3 for access to over a dozen bands, in two venues, on one night.

Friday

Friday night has at least three highlight shows, some would say more. First of all The Helio Sequence and Menomena are touring together and they'll play the Mohawk. You can go for the cost of a $15 ticket. Buy one now because this show is going to sell-out at any moment. Both of these bands are fantastic, I would call this a double-headliner.

Just down the street at Beerland you can catch A Giant Dog. If you're coming from the Mohawk show, there should be more than enough time to catch all of The Helio Sequence and all of A Giant Dog's set as well.

Ty Segall will be back in Austin Friday night. It was only a month ago that he played the Mohawk but this time he is touring with Fuzz so don't expect to hear a set of Ty Segall songs at Red 7 Friday night. Expect a show from Fuzz with Ty Segall on the drums.

Saturday

Saturday night I might head back to Red 7 for Black Milk on the outside stage and Houndmouth on the inside stage. Those are separate shows with separate tickets so if you're balling on a budget you might choose based on personal taste.

My other Saturday night highlight is gAyCL 2013. All you really need to know about this event is that it takes place at Cheer-Up Charlies and that it's really fun. To me this event is as much a party as it is a concert. You should only go if you want to have lots of fun Saturday night.

Sunday

Sunday night, bitch please. I'm going to bed.

Menomena and PVT at the Parish

Whenever a good touring act is booked at the Parish an angel gets its wings. I'm not privy to all of the politics of booking a show in Austin but I get the feeling that touring bands only get booked there if they specifically request it. With that all said, I'm thinking Menomena specifically requested they play The Parish on their trip through Austin. Their latest record Moms has been out for a month and it continues in the same logical progression from where we last left Menomena. It's a Wednesday night show so dirty 6th won't be in full-on frat-dog mode and you won't have to pay for a parking meter until midnight. Factor in one of the Pacific-Northwest's best touring bands in the best sounding room in the city and you're looking at a great way to spend a Wednesday night. Tickets are only $16, which could be considered a bit steep but I had the chance to see Menomena at SXSW and they are truly phenomenal performers so you should really consider prying open your wallet for this show.

Playing the opening slot for Menomena Wednesday night at the Parish will be PVT. They used to be signed to Warp Records but they have jumped to a more indie, indie label for their next album, which isn't due out until next year. I had the pleasure of listening to half of the upcoming album and I think this is a really good pairing for Menomena. It's musically adventurous, driving, music that will make you want to move. I wouldn't call it dance music but it isn't, sit in a dark room with headphones on music either. Listen to the first single from the upcoming album and decide for yourself:

SXSW 2011 Preview: Menomena

Just like yesterday, when I featured James Blake, today, I am featuring an artist whom you probably know already, Menomena. This Portland, Oregon band has been huge in the blogosphere for a million blog-years but their latest LP, Mines proves why you should care about them. Their music is interesting, intense, intriguing and other adjectives that start with i...inviting? These guys are no strangers to Austin, or SXSW for that matter, and I expect that you'll have many chances to catch their live-show both at official and unofficial events around the city. I'm most-excited to catch their set at the Central Presbyterian Church, whose acoustics should make for an amazingly memorable show. The band has inferred to me via Twitter that they will have a video from Mines in the near future but for now, I'll settle for what, to me, is already a classic tune.

I e-mailed Barsuk for a list of all of the shows that Menomena have scheduled during SXSW and they returned my message with a listing of 2 shows...I don't believe them BUT this is what they told me:

03/17/11 Barsuk Showcase at Red Eyed Fly
03/18/11 Under The Radar at Flamingo Cantina

There is also the listing I mentioned above the break at Central Presbyterian Church happening on Friday evening March 18th, which is listed on the official SXSW website.

Menomena is also listed on Show List Austin at a free day-party happening Saturday March 19th, called South By San Jose, which takes place at Jo's Coffee on South Congress. They are alleged to be performing at 4p, sandwiched between White Denim and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears

I expect the band will be playing some, other, high-profile day-party-type events yet to be announced. In the meantime, you should definitely check out that Under the Radar party though. There are some GREAT bands playing that event and Flamingo Cantina is a fantastic, intimate venue. That place is emeffin tiny y'all!

Here's a faux-video of a song from their latest LP, Mines, while we anxiously wait for a new promotional clip from the band. Once, again I urge you to not rely, solely, on this site for your SXSW show information. All shows are subject to change and many pop-up closer to the event. This is merely intended as a highlighter.

Bloggy's Best of 2010 - Music

If you're like me and you probably are if you read blogs, you love lists. Well, 'tis the season and if you can't beat 'em join 'em along with several other clichés. So, let me lead off this year's best albums of 2010 list with the usual disclaimers. The first of which is, love of art is subjective it's hard to compare a hip-hop album to lo-fi garage-rock and then subsequently rank them but that's what I intend to do. Also, I have a full-time job, which doesn't include blogging I also like to watch films and television SO I didn't listen to every album that came out this year I also didn't listen to all of the most critically-acclaimed albums of the year.

Yesterday you had the chance to read Shivvy's best of list, which I fully approve of. Combined with this list, you should get a nice picture in 28 albums of what 2010 had to offer in the way of music. With that all said, I give you the official Bloggy selections for best albums of 2010:
