eels Play Stubb's Tonight

Wow, I almost completely forgot that eels are playing Stubb's tonight. Lucky for all of us tickets are still available. I love eels but I haven't spent much time with the TWO albums that, E released last year. In fact I didn't even really realize there were TWO until just this moment. I remember End Times coming out early in the year but I didn't realize that another album came out in the fall, called Tomorrow Morning. Add those to the 2009 album, Hombre Lobo and you've got some pretty prolific writing as of late. I haven't even mentioned the Trilogy EP, which you can download for free, in exchange for your email address:

I have never seen eels perform live so I wouldn't really know what to expect. Will Novacaine For the Soul be the encore song? Or is that pretty much a different band at this point? I know I was a different person when that song was a hit, how about you?

Los Angeles indie-popsters, The Submarines will be playing the support slot for eels tonight. Their latest LP, Love Notes/Letter Bombs came out this spring and is the third full-length from the band. It might be the most immediately accessible release to date. They're not re-inventing the wheel here people, they are just writing some catchy, sugary-sweet indie-pop gems. I fear their music might be a sharp contrast to the often darker themes of eels but perhaps that is the intent?

The Wooden Birds play The Mohawk

Well folks, The Wooden Birds are winding down their tour but they're making a stop at, the much-lauded, Mohawk before things are over. You can still get yourself some tickets for the quality price of $10-$12. The latest album from The Wooden Birds is out now on Barsuk Records, it's called Two Matchsticks and features members of Broken Social Scene, as well as Matt Pond PA. Did you know the band's frontman, Andrew Kenny, actually has a residence here in Austin? I'm not sure if he truly lives here all the time but it kind of makes sense why the tour would wind-down in your hometown right?

Local band, ((sounder)) will be opening for The Wooden Birds tomorrow night. For those of you who don't know, {{sounder}} is the music project of visual artist, video director and musician Mike Aho. Aho has done videos for Bonnie Prince Billy and is also known for a project he calls The Internet Shack for Thrasher Magazine. Yes, I learned all of this from the {{sounder}} MySpace page, which crashed my computer. A note to bands, please use a combination of Bandcamp and Wikipedia, thank you.

Iceage Play Emo's, Can't Buy Smokes

If you wanna ride the blog-wave and got on the front end of the hype then you best get thyself to Emo's tomorrow night to catch Iceage. These Danish art-punks are touring the U.S. for the first time and most of them are too young to buy cigarettes. Their LP, New Brigade even landed them a spot on Stereogum's list of the Top 20 Albums of 2011. How's that for blog-buzz? I would compare their sound to, maybe HEALTH? It has a punk aesthetic but it's also full of dark-goth keys and sad, moody vocals. Expect lots of glowering from the stage and some really loud guitars. On record it sounds like there will be a mix of live drums and v-drums so I'll be interested to see how the whole thing turns out on Emo's inside stage. If you, too, went to check out how 17 year old dudes from Denmark rock out you should grab yourself a ticket or two, they're only $8 and it's not sold-out yet.

Don't Miss the Opening Act: Young Buffalo

This post could have been a part of my "Planning Ahead" series as Young Buffalo won't, actually, be hitting Austin until early August. However, I expect with Arctic Monkeys headlining Young Buffalo at Stubb's WILL sell-out. In other words, if you don't already have your tickets you best be grabbing them now.

Young Buffalo are a trio from Mississippi and they are a part of a grand tradition of American bands, who are more popular overseas than they are at home. With change-up rhythms, multi-part, pop harmonies and gorgeous melodies their upcoming EP, Young Von Pretty Lips will make you an instant fan. You can pre-order and/or listen to a sample of the EP over on their artist page from Cantora Records or if you prefer to cut out the middle-man you may, simply, purchase the EP from the band at Stubb's on August 2nd when they open for the Arctic Monkeys.

As the title of this post implies I am highlighting the opening act, since I assume you are already aware of the headliners, Arctic Monkeys. However, perhaps you are not aware of their latest LP Suck It and See, in addition to being one of the classiest album titles all year it's their follow-up to the, somewhat forgettable, Humbug. Luckily for both the fans and the Monkeys, Suck It and See is more of a return to form for the band with propulsive, bratty, clever writing and lots of brain-tattooing guitar melodies. Even if the band decided to only play their worst music at Stubb's on August 2nd their energy and enthusiasm would win the crowd over. I expect this show to be over-the-top drunken fun. Hopefully the drunkenness will MOSTLY be the audience but chances are the Arctic Monkeys will have imbibed a few Strongbows before they hit the stage. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin'.

Shows to Catch This Weekend (and tonight)

As I mentioned in my previous post, it is summer festival season in Europe, which means a lot of Bloggy favs aren't even on this continent right now HOWEVER, that doesn't mean you've got nothing to do this weekend. The first thing I want to mention is actually happening tonight. The Glitch Mob is making their return to Austin at La Zona Rosa tonight. Tickets should be available at the door and make sure you get there in time to catch the uber-buzzy support-act, Com Truise.

Friday night is all about Emo's inside stage for some blues-psychedelic freak-out fun with Smoke & Feathers. They'll be playing the support slot for Dax Riggs. You can grab some, reasonably-priced, tickets if you wish but you could probably risk it and pay at the door if you prefer.

Saturday has a few good options, depending on what suits your fancy. As I mentioned in my previous posting, White Denim always put on a great show and they'll be playing at Antone's with TV Torso. As of right now you can still get tickets but this one will, most likely, sell-out.

If White Denim's not for you, that's ok, there are THREE other viable options. They are somewhat lesser-known artists but they are noteworthy nonetheless. You've got Cass McCombs playing Lambert's. Or, you could check out the latest incarnation of The Blow at Emo's. Last but not least, you could head on over to the Mohawk to catch John Maus with Puro Instinct.

Planning Ahead: Lotsa Ticket Links

Well folks, you may have noticed from the lack of activity here at Austin Bloggy Limits, that I am lazy. Also, it's European festival season, which means a lot of my indie-rock crushes and darlings are playing to fields full of muddy people. However, there are still good shows in the future, for which tickets are available NOW. It is for that reason that I am giving you info and ticket links about noteworthy shows on sale now. I am prefacing this by saying that I do not, necessarily, endorse all of the following shows, artists, etc. It is just my way of being informative. So, which I may not, specifically, be a fan of Owl City I recognize that some of you are fans hence the inclusion of that show.

The only show I want to mention before the break is happening this Friday and features a fantastic local line-up sponsored by the wretchedly out of touch 101x. It's weird how a station can be so good at sponsoring shows and so bad at playing the artists performing at said shows. With that being said, you should grab yourself some tickets to see White Denim and TV Torso at Antone's. I highly approve of these artists. Those of you who are saying, "Oh White Denim they play all the time, I'm bored with them, blah." First of all, you're an asshole, secondly their newest album D is fucking awesome so shut the fuck up and get a ticket already you whiny bitch. Also, if you talk through their set imma let you finish, then imma throw a drink in your face. Wow, I just got salty there sorry about that.

Be a Part of History

You could be a part of history Friday night at Emo's. All you have to do is attend the R. Steve Moore show. See, Moore is one of those underground legends who you may not have heard of but most of the artists you listen to have. He has released over 400 albums through his early cassette clubs and, more recent, CD-R clubs. He is known to be a pop-recluse so seeing him outside of Brooklyn, where he resided most of his life or Nashville, where he has lived more recently, is a rare treat. His latest album was created with the help of Kickstarter and his current tour is also a Kickstarter tour, in other words this guy is more DIY than DIY. You can be a part of history because the tour is being captured on video and will be a part of an upcoming documentary featuring Moore. Tickets for the show are still available and let's face it, there's really nothing better going on Friday night. Besides, as I mentioned above this show is, pretty much, a once in a lifetime opportunity. Fifty nine year old musicians known to be pop-genius-recluses don't exactly tour on the regular.

You can catch Pong and Jad Fair in the opening time slots. Also, Brooklyn band Tropical Ooze will have their own set then later they will be R. Steve Moore's backing band. The Rosebuds or The Calm Blue Sea

Damn you Austin! Why do you do this to me? I was all prepared to focus on The Rosebuds show at The Parish tomorrow night. I love their latest LP, Loud Planes Fly Low and they always put on a fantastic live set. Also, I haven't been to the Parish in sooooo long because their bookings have been pretty shite lately. I like it when C3 Presents and/or Transmission Entertainment book shows at The Parish because the sound and lights are fantastic but I feel like whoever manages that joint must be hard to deal with because the good bookings have been more and more infrequent. Remember when Grizzly Bear played there? Or Bat For Lashes?

In any case, tomorrow night with The Rosebuds, you really can't miss. Not to mention, one of my favorite up-and-coming artists, Other Lives are sharing the bill. I had the pleasure to see these troupe of Oklahomians(?) Oklahomies(?) Oklahomites(?)...Okies, open for The Decemberists at Stubb's this spring and I fell in love. Their latest album is called, Tamer Animals and it's out now on TBD Records, which you might know as the label that puts out all of Radiohead's latest LP's. Tickets for tomorrow night's show at The Parish are STILL available and will only put you back $12.

So, I started to say above the break, I was focused on The Rosebuds show at The Parish, when I noticed one of my favorite local bands The Calm Blue Sea is playing the Mohawk's outside stage tomorrow night. This show as originally scheduled to be at ND, which is a lovely venue but now that it's at the Mohawk it's become more irresistible. I love the band, I love the venue. The only thing that MIGHT save me, is if the show at The Parish has a later start time than the show at the Mohawk but I don't really believe that to be true. So I may have to rip the baby in half via Solomon. The info I have shows The Calm Blue Sea playing the Mohawk at 11pm tomorrow night. The doors for The Parish show open at 7pm but I just really don't think that show will be over by 11pm. Just 'cause the doors are open doesn't really mean the show is starting within the hour...necessarily. Keep an eye on my Twitter feed and I'll let you know what I know when I know it.

Electric Touch at the Mohawk

Our friends are throwing a party at the Mohawk tonight with bands and stuff. Given that tonight is the solstice, chances are, the sun will still be up when the doors open at 8pm. How crazy is that? So, move your pagan rituals to the outside area at the Mohawk and enjoy some local, live music while you sacrifice that virgin. Then, when you're through you can grab an ice-cold Lone Star.


Tonight's party is presented by our brethren of the blog over at Ultra 8201 and the great purveyors of party over at From_The_Mind_of_Adi. In my experience these people don't know how to have an unsuccessful event so if you don't have specific solstice plans in mind you should shell out $5 and enjoy.
