Bloggy-faithful, you know how much I love the Parish, so whenever there is a noteworthy show there I like to mark it with a digital highlighter. Consider this little post about the Classixx show to be your digital highlighter. The whole thing goes down Friday night and will be presented by those lovely folks over at Learning Secrets. If you've never been to a Learning Secrets party before then you really have no business using the word "party" also, we might have to break-up. You can get a preview of what you're in for by downloading Classixx's latest LP Into The Valley, which is available as a free download over at Green Label Sound. Chances are you've already heard one of Classixx, bad-ass remixes of songs you already love but then later realized you could love those songs more once you heard the remix. Theophilus London at Lustre Pearl
Theophilus London is playing a free, invite-only kinda show next week in Austin to kick off, Special Engagements by Noisey. The series will debut on August 20th at the Lustre Pearl and be the first of a 7 month series which will travel to the U.K., Germany, China, Brazil and France before returning to the U.S.. The Special Engagements series, presented by Dell and Intel, is a highly-interactive experience. Fans will determine, which exclusive remix Theophilus London debuts during his set; send in visual interpretations of his album, Timez Are Weird These Days, to accompany the performance; submit for shout-outs; and even decide the shirt he wears on stage. Leading up to the debut event in Austin you, the audience, will determine factors of the performance via polling widgets, Twitter and Facebook. Bloggy Goes Corporate?
Ok, so I'm not REALLY going corporate BUT I did want to talk about Spotify. As you, probably, know by now Spotify is a music service that has been active in Europe for quite sometime but has finally become available to us yanks. It's a legal, label-sanctioned way for you to listen to music using, the previously unpopular, subscription model. You can choose to use the service for free if you don't mind visual and aural ads. As of right now, there is no time-limit on the free Spotify accounts in the U.S. but in Europe you can only listen for 10 hours/month, I expect that will be the case in the United States once the service has been available for a few months. You can also choose to *gasp* PAY for your music with 2 options. The $5/month "Unlimited" plan offers pretty much the same as the current version of the free service minus the obtrusive ads. It's called "Unlimited" because there is no time-limit but as I mentioned this isn't an issue in our market YET. The other option is the $10/month "Premium" model. At this price-point you get higher quality song streaming, no ads, unlimited time, access on your mobile device(s) and offline playlist mode. Offline mode allows you to choose playlists that you want to sync and make those songs available even when you don't have an internet connection.

I know you're thinking, who cares? First of all, at this point most have you have already heard about and/or use Spotify so why am I pimping it? Well, there are a couple of things that set it apart from our other options. My favorite part of the service is the creation and sharing of playlists. As a music-nerd, like most of you, I used to spend hours making mix tapes to give to friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances. Spotify brings that concept into the 21st century. Remember iMixes on iTunes? Do they still do that? Well, now you can create a 200 song playlist and it won't cost your friends $200 to download it. I used this feature to make playlists for ACL Fest as well as FunFunFun Fest. You can browse your friend's playlists and choose to listen to them, or subscribe to them if they are playlists that you want easier access to and/or you think they will be updated frequently.
The other major thing that sets Spotify apart from its competitors past and present is the selection. I'm not saying that you can listen to everything you can think of but it's closer to that reality than any service I have used in the past. There are some hold-outs and weird choices. For instance you can't listen to anything from Arcade Fire but you can listen to most of their Merge Records label-mates. Also, you can listen to Adele but not her HUGE breakout album 21. There are also instances of selective absences when an artist's catalog is missing key tracks. There are also some blind-spots in the interface, the service doesn't do the "Related Artists" thing as well as some of its competitors. However, since Spotify integrates with Last.fm you can still use that to find similar artists. Another interface issue I have is, since Spotify integrates with the music library on your computer, it can be hard to tell what's in your library as opposed to the theirs when making playlists. There may be a setting for this that I'm unaware of though.
As of this moment I have not forked over money to use Spotify but the ads are getting me closer to the point of wanting to spend at least $5/month. I can deal with visual banner ads. Spotify is its own program, you don't use it within the website so I just choose a playlist or album and hide the program. However, the aural ads can be really problematic. For instance, I was listening to a group of chill-out dub-step songs from Jamie Woon when suddenly I was hearing a sampling from Eminem's latest effort with Royce da 5'9". Needless to say it sort of ruined the mood.

When the U.S. version of Spotify sets a time-limit I will be HIGHLY encouraged to fork out the dough for the service. Mr. S. just bought the premium service immediately and he uses the iPhone app in the car. He is constantly making really great, themed mixes as well. One of my personal favs is his ULTIMATE MARY J. mix of Mary J. Blige tracks.
I guess the long and short of it comes down to a few key questions. How do you access your music? How much are you willing to pay for music? If you prefer to purchase vinyl and listen only at your record player maybe this isn't for you. I will tell you, it's a good way to listen to an album and decided whether or not you want to spend $20 on the record. If you do choose to jump on the bandwagon, find me, make some playlists, let's do this thing.

Avi Buffalo at Stubb's
As a loyal reader of this website, I'm sure you already know my love for, Los Angeles band, Avi Buffalo they have been a band to look out for at SXSW (possibly more than once) and I try to give you the heads-up every time they come through Austin. Well guess what? Avi Buffalo will be in town tomorrow. They're playing Stubb's inside stage tomorrow night and you can still get tickets. Their latest release How Come? picks up right where their eponymous debut left off and is intended to tide us all over until the next full-length album is released. If you haven't heard Avi Buffalo's self-titled debut yet, then you're really missing out and you clearly haven't been taking my suggestions in the past. Woods play the Mohawk
So, tomorrow is Friday night, which means you have to find something socially-approveable to do with your time. I know, it's a lot of pressure, we live in a very judge-y society and that's wrong but it's a fact that we have to live with. Chances are, if you're reading this, you live in Austin so you're gonna wax your handlebar mustache, throw on some jorts and a Goodwill T-shirt hop on your fixie and pedal on down to the Mohawk. You're going to do all of this because psychedelic, lo-fi, Brooklyn band, Woods is headlining the outside stage. Being from Brooklyn, they WILL out hipster you, so don't challenge them to a hipster off. They like bands who only perform in people's living rooms and they drink the fairest of trade, organically-roasted coffees. They prefer Pabst to Lone Star and they have been cultivating their handlebar mustaches WAY longer. Also, anything you like, they liked first and now they hate it and you're lame.

Planning Ahead: Get Your Tickets NOW!
I've been getting a lot of positive feedback from real life, face-to-face humans about my posts in which I put loads of ticket links to shows in the near and distant future. So, I'm going to try to do it every month or so. I'm not going back to the posts I did previously, so there may be repetition but I figure that's an advantage. Also, I'm not giving loads of details just who and where, the when you can figure out when you click the link. Arctic Monkeys w/Young Buffalo
Well folks, I warned you that tonight's Arctic Monkeys show with Young Buffalo at Stubb's would sell-out and alas it did. Since you can no longer purchase tickets, I'll keep this post brief. I just want to remind you to get there early enough to catch, support act, Young Buffalo. Their, recently released EP, Young Von Prettylips is dynamic, interesting and at less than 20 minutes easy to digest. Moonface at Emo's Tonight
You know who needs more bands? Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Swan Lake, Fifths of Seven, Two Tonne Bowlers and Frog Eyes fame. Oh, wait, what's that you say? Krug has a NEW project called Moonface? Well, if I only they were coming to Austin soon so I could get a sense for what they sound like a week before their album is released. Speak up! Did you just tell me that they are playing at Emo's tonight?!?! How very convenient! Are you a wizard?

Ume Comes Home to The Mohawk
Austin power-trio Ume are back! They've been signed to, local label, Modern Outsider and they have a new album coming out (on translucent, pink vinyl) on Aug. 30th called Phantoms. I have not heard the new album yet but I have it on good authority that the mastering is complete and the album completely shreds. You can hear lots of new songs from Ume Friday night at the Mohawk where they'll be supporting a little band called, Mission of Burma. In the meantime, feel free to head on over to the Modern Outsider Soundcloud page to hear Ume's latest single, Captive. At the moment tickets for Friday night's show are still available but that won't last very long so you better grab one if you want to be there.

What do I really need to say about legendary, Boston post-punk band Mission of Burma? I feel like all you really need to know was in the last sentence. At this point they have influenced an entire generation of bands and they helped to make Matador Records a label that people care about. The band did release an album in 2009 but I would consider their stop at the Mohawk to be more of a reunion-type gig. I'm sure they'll play some of their new stuff but I'd expect it to be more of a "greatest hits" setlist. Of course, this is all just conjecture at this point, only time will tell what they really play.
