Are you as psyched about that shhhty cell phone picture as I am? 2 megapixels in really low light truly captures a grainy energy that is hard to see with the naked eye alone...
I went downtown to La Zona Rosa for the Ultra8201 show last night. The line-up featured, the White White Lights, followed by True Widow with Ume rounding out the bill in the headlining slot.
I had never been to La Zona when it was set up for a "club show" it's pretty cool how they manage to make the place so much more intimate. The bathrooms still smelled like an outhouse, but that's to be expected. I love La Zona for its sound and its temperature control but I don't love its $4.50 Lone Stars.
All of the bands were unique and talented but I would have to say that True Widow had a style that just wasn't for me. They were just a bit sludgy sounding for my taste. My only other "negative" band critique is just I want the White White Lights's singer, Jenny, to stand up at least for some of the songs. It might look awkward to stand behind a keyboard stand but I think she could work it. She's performs like she may explode with energy at any moment but that's harder to do sitting down. No offense, just sayin'. <3 U Jenny G.
Final summary after the jump...
In short the whole idea of a show sponsored by Ultra8201 was pretty exciting for me as an Austin blogger. It means that Austin's under-represented music-blog scene has a shot to become more influential taste-makers in this city of musicians and critics. Perhaps Austin bloggers will follow the example of the big music blogs: Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, Large Hearted Boy, Gorilla Vs. Bear, My Old Kentucky Blog, Aquarium Drunkard etc. and start booking/promoting our own shows. What's up now 3 Charlies? Just kidding I love you C3 presents let's hang out and shhh, call me.
Oh yeah, and do I even need to say...AGAIN how much Ume effing killed it up in that piece last night? Didn't think so. Stage-presence like whoa! Peace.
